n8n vs. Zapier vs. Make in 2026: An Engineer's Honest Comparison
We run client automations on n8n, Make and Zapier every day, so this comparison comes from production scars, not affiliate links. The short version: Zapier for speed at low volume, Make for power at mid volume and visual debugging, n8n for ownership at scale. The long version depends on your cost curve and your compliance needs.
The cost curve is the real decision
Zapier prices per task, which is fine at 500 tasks a month and painful at 50,000 — success literally raises your bill. Make's operations-based pricing is gentler but follows the same curve. Self-hosted n8n flips it: infrastructure costs are near-flat whether you run a thousand executions or a million. If your automation volume grows with revenue (orders, leads, tickets), the curve matters more than the sticker price.
Reliability and debugging
Make has the best visual debugging in the business — you can watch data flow bundle by bundle, which makes complex scenario surgery tractable. n8n's execution logs are strong and improving fast, with the advantage that you control retention. Zapier keeps things simple, which also means less visibility when things get weird. For all three, the real reliability comes from how you build: error routes, retries and alerting are on you — and they're the difference between automation you trust and automation you check.
AI capabilities
All three now bolt AI steps into flows. n8n is the most flexible for serious AI work — custom code nodes, LangChain-style agent nodes and clean API calls to Claude or GPT with full prompt control. Make's AI modules are capable and quick to wire. Zapier's are the most constrained. If AI judgment is central to your workflows rather than a garnish, that flexibility gap widens quickly.
Data control and compliance
For healthcare, finance and anyone with a serious compliance function, self-hosted n8n is often the only acceptable answer: data stays inside your infrastructure. Cloud platforms are fine for most SMBs, but check where your customer data actually flows before your auditor does.
